Hawaiʻi · Phase 1

A place, a meal notice, a quiet message.

Homeless X is a peer network for people looking for shelter or food in Hawaiʻi, and for family, volunteers, and donors trying to help without exposing someone’s location.

  • No account on this websiteThere is no web signup and no store listing. The app keeps each account on the device.
  • Public from the startA new account is public tier. Map, food alerts, lost and found, and skill share are not locked behind referrals.
  • Four islands in the searchOʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, and Hawaiʻi. The first seed is a small set of public places, mostly on Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi.

Map

Public places, not people’s pins.

The map shows shelters, food banks, soup kitchens, and outreach points drawn from OpenStreetMap. Tap a pin for the name, category, hours, phone, wheelchair access, operator, and distance from you.

What gets a pin

Homeless shelters, food banks, soup kitchens, and outreach. A plain picnic shelter, bus shelter, or animal shelter does not. Facilities limited to women, children, seniors, or people leaving abuse stay off the public map unless they are also tagged for people experiencing homelessness.

What never gets a pin

Other people. The map can show your own location to you. Someone else’s precise location stays off the map. A donor, family member, or public viewer cannot see another person’s pin. Quiet mode tightens that further.

Saved on the phone

The first launch uses a local Hawaiʻi seed. Later refreshes can ask OpenStreetMap and keep a local cache, with basic duplicate removal. Maui and Kauaʻi can show no pins when the source has no matching public facility.

Credit

Place data is © OpenStreetMap contributors. Homeless X does not operate these facilities and does not guarantee that a listed kitchen is serving today.

Food alerts

A notice that food is out, near where you are.

People who are seeking help, volunteering, or using a public account can post a food alert. The list can be filtered by distance. A donor can read alerts and cannot post them.

Weather is not live yet

A person can post a weather notice against a pinned location. This build does not call a weather service. The provider key is a stub in the app config.

Boards

Lost and found, and skills offered or wanted.

Both boards are in the app. Skill posts can be framed as job mentorship. Donors can read them and cannot post. Family accounts can post skills. Public accounts can post and cannot open messages.

Lost and found

Post an item and mark a claim. The record stays with the account on that device.

Messages are one to one

Threads stay inside the app. A message is not passed through other people. An address or precise location is withheld until both people confirm. Every thread and profile has a report button. Reports are stored on the device in this build.

Quiet mode

Location hidden, except from people you name.

Quiet mode hides your location from everyone who is not on your trusted-contact list. Seeking and volunteer accounts may see another person’s pin only when quiet mode is off, or when it is on and they are trusted. You always see your own pin.

Roles

  • SeekingMap, alerts, boards, and messages. Location follows quiet mode.
  • VolunteerSame tools as seeking, including posts and messages.
  • FamilyOne-to-one messages and skill posts. No one else’s precise location. No relay through a third person.
  • DonorRead listings and send a direct message. Cannot post food, lost and found, or skills. Never sees another person’s precise location or message history.
  • PublicMap, food alerts, lost and found, and skill share, including posting. Cannot message, and cannot see other people’s locations.

Referrals

A code to share. The clock is stubbed.

Each account can generate a code and share it. Signing up with a code does not raise a tier by itself. In this build, the person who shared the code can run a stand-in for the 30-day activity check. It does not wait 30 real days. Tiers stop at three. Perk text is a placeholder and does not unlock features.

Already open without a code

A public-tier account with zero referrals still sees the map, food alerts, lost and found, and skill share.

Not in this build

What Homeless X does not do yet.

  • No donation matching.
  • No message routed through several family members.
  • No live Soliguide, 211, or Findhelp feed.
  • No live weather provider.
  • No server account. Deleting the app data deletes the account on that device.
  • No web login on this site.
  • No App Store or Play listing to download.
  • No medicine map and no food-desert layer.

Privacy

Your record stays where you created it.

This website has no forms, no accounts, and no analytics. The phone app can export your profile, posts, and messages as JSON, and can delete the personal record after you confirm. Location history on the device rolls off after 30 days. The full notes are on the privacy page.
